Tracey C. Velt is a Central Florida-based freelance writer, editor and blogger. She earned her Bachelor’s of Arts in Journalism from the University of Central Florida in 1989 and has been the editor in chief of several magazines in her 21-year career.

If you want prose that pops and features that sizzle, you’re come to the right place. With more than 20 years of magazine writing, editing and honing editorial strategy, Tracey takes the ordinary and makes it extraordinary.

In addition to writing the super stylish blog, Magpie Style, she writes and edits a popular real estate blog, REAL Trends’ Blog, that has more than 16,000 subscribers and is managing editor of Playground magazine, a hip Central Florida parenting magazine. In addition, she serves as a contributing editor of Florida Realtor magazine, an industry publication with a circulation of more than 100,000, and writes for a variety of state and national business magazines. She’s been the lead editorial strategist on two magazine redesigns and has won numerous editorial awards.

Tracey specializes in personal profiles, feature stories, editorial strategy and magazine redesigns. She is available to take on writing and editing assignments and would like to use her passion for fashion to springboard her career into some new writing niches. Tracey can be reached at (407) 333-8885 or via email at Tracey@traceyvelt.com.

The Highlight Reel

• Was lead editorial strategist on two major magazine redesigns. Both won Florida Magazine Association awards for Best Magazine Redesign.

• I know both the business side and the editorial side of a magazine. I’ve worked with printers and have a working (yet limited) knowledge of magazine production. I’ve developed budgets for magazines with revenue in excess of half a million dollars.

• Since 2000, Florida Realtor magazine has consistently won a Best Written Magazine award from the Florida Magazine Association.

• I understand the creative process and know the importance of “service” journalism in today’s fast-paced society.

Resume

August 1990-August 2004
Editor-in-Chief — Florida Realtor Magazine

Editor of monthly, 100,000+-circulation business magazine for real estate professionals. I wrote personality profiles, features and departments. Responsible for all editorial content, free-lance writers, art concepts, budget, managing a staff of four and on-line version of magazine. The magazine is a 64+ page glossy, saddle-wire bound book that generates almost $1 million in sales revenue yearly. I started as communications assistant in 1990 and was promoted to assistant editor in 1992. I was promoted again to editor in chief in 1997. I left to pursue a freelance career.

May 2011-July 2011
Interim Editor — Playground magazine

Editor of quarterly 10,000+ circulation Central Florida parenting magazine for the Summer 2011 issue. I was responsible for developing story ideas, writing and editing all features and departments and working with freelance writers while the editor was out on maternity leave. I still continue to write for this publication.

August 2009-Present
Fashion/Style Blogger for Magpie Style

After fielding question after question from friends about what to wear for pictures, how to style an outfit and where I purchased a clothing or accessory item, I decided to start a blog about it. I’m passionate about fashion and personal style.  The blog is a work in progress with style tips, personal outfits, observations and favorite items.

August 2004-Present
Writer/Editor—REALTrends and Murray Consulting

Responsible for writing and editing a biweekly e-newsletter, REAL Trends Real Estate Update. I also serve as editor and head writer for a real estate blog, REAL Trends Blog and write stories in the monthly print publication.

August 2004-Present
Contributing Editor/Consultant — Florida Realtor magazine

I am responsible for the editorial content, freelance writers and art concepts for the magazine. I am essentially doing the same job I did while employed full time minus the business side of the magazine.

Interim Web Editor/Consultant — Florida Realtors

As Web editor, I was responsible for research and development of new member and consumer Web sites. I am still working periodically on this project organizing content.

December 1999-February 2006
Free-lance writer/editor/consultant — Knight

I worked as an independent contractor writing feature articles, corporate communications and business items. Publications include The Source, a now-defunct Hughes Supply quarterly business magazine; SupplyLine, a monthly Hughes Supply employee newsletter; FirstMonday, (see 2005 issues) a Chamber of Commerce monthly publication that features news for small business members and Move, a relocation guide (served as editor/writer of this publication.)

June 2004-September 2006 — FirstMonday magazine
Editor in Chief

Set the editorial direction and re-launch for a new FirstMonday publication that serves as the community source for smart business. This 40-page magazine has a circulation of 10,000 business owners and is tabloid-sized.
