Short Shorts

When the weather is hot, I love wearing shorts with heels when I go out at night. The key is to cover up enough so you don’t look sleezy. Short short plus cleavage plus sheer is a major NO!

I love the pow power of this neon pink blouse.

Review: Tuni’s Warehouse Sale

This is what I wore to the Tuni’s Warehouse Sale. Tuni’s is an upscale women’s boutique on Park Ave. in Winter Park. Every year, they pack a location with past-season clothing and sell it at the warehouse sale. While I do love the brands Tuni’s carries—DVF, Haute Hippie, Madison Marcus, Kelsi Dagger—I don’t shop there very often. It’s pretty pricey. And, I’ve never gone to the warehouse sale—bad move on my part! You know I LOVE a good designer deal!

The warehouse (next to White Wolf Cafe) was packed with merchandise in a wide range of sizes. The dress section was particularly impressive. I made an appointment to get early access. I have to admit, I thought a stylist was going to work with me at that appointment, however it appears making an appointment is just a way to get in early and browse in relative privacy. I knocked on the door, a very friendly stylist welcomed me and other than taking my items to the dressing room, she left me alone. I think if I requested her help, she would have given it to me. There were only two other women shopping at the time.

The prices were awesome. Most items were slashed at least 60% off original prices. A super-on-trend gold/green brocade jacket by DVF retailed for $500 and was $99 at the sale. I saw Rebecca Taylor dresses for $50 and Haute Hippie tops for $30. The jewelry was amazing as well—a huge selection. I was hoping to find a pair of skinny, colored or printed jeans; however the denim section was weak. Only a few pairs of jeans and in very small sizes. The shoe selection was small as well, although there was an amazing pair of wedge boots (can’t remember the designer, possibly Stuart Weitzman.)

I ended up with a royal blue blouse (can’t remember designer, it was one I didn’t recognize) for $30 and two super-cool necklaces that were $15 and $30. There were some other items I thought about buying but I wasn’t in love enough to get them.

Tuni’s Warehouse sale is going on now through September 5, Monday-Saturday 10am to 7pm and Sunday noon to 5pm. The sale is well signed, right next to White Wolf Cafe on Orange Ave. 1901 N. Orange Ave. All sales are final. It’s worth a look!

What I Want Now

Fall Wish List Magpie Style
Fall, already? Yep, and I’m LOVING it! Here’s a list of what I want now and why.

1. Camo—A huge trend for fall—all things military. This has been a continuing trend from the last few years. I have to be honest, I figured this trend had its day, but I guess not! I love this camo jacket from Zara, complete with embellishments that make it more girly. I would wear this with a tee shirt, leather pants and booties.

2. Metallic—Continuing with my love of all things shiny, this trend is one of my favs for Fall. Of course, the silver metallic DVF leather pants are on my radar, but not something I will buy. Instead, I’ll go lower key and get some dark grey metallic jeans like the ones from Rag and Bone. The dress—how hot is that purple metallic?

3. Leather—Yep, leather continues to be a trend and this is the year people will really start wearing it. I notice that when trends first start (this one started about three years ago), only celebs and early-adopter fashionistas wear it; then the next year, the big city girls go for the trend. Finally, it becomes a full-blown trend, and you can’t spit without seeing someone in it. I first noticed that with knee-high boots. Remember when you felt uncomfortable rocking that trend because you were likely the only one with them? Or, how you marveled at the chick with the skinny jeans tucked into her tall boots? Now, they’re everywhere, and I bet you’re wearing them too. Anywhoo…I love the leather accents, such as the leather sleeves on the black jacket from Theory. It’s an easy way to rock the trend.

4. Denim—All kinds of styles are in now—patterns, metallic, coated, skinny, flare, etc. On my wish list are a pair of skinnies that don’t hug my thighs like sausage casings. I also was on the hunt for a pair of boyfriends that weren’t baggy all over. I found them in the Gap Sexy Boyfriend jeans.

5. Prints—From bright florals like on this Equipment blouse, to mirror prints like on the AllSaints skirt—pattern and print lend interest to your outfits.

6. Boots and Loafers—I adore the smoking slipper loafers. They give an edge to outfits and are a little more on trend than ballet flats (which I still love.) I also love these slouchy boots from Isabel Marant, which I purchased recently. They’ll be easy to throw on with dresses and jeans in the Fall and Winter. In fact, I wore them the other day (outfit post to follow.)

7. Pretty Things—Again, I’m a sucker for feathers, glitz and glam, which is why I totally LOVE this feather skirt from Zara. I’ll have to invent an event in which to wear it though. ::sigh:: I also love this more wearable black dress from Erin Fetherston. It has on-trend metallic foil butterflies all over it and is a flattering style.

What’s on your Fall wish list?

Navy and Green

I love this color combo: navy and green. I’ve been searching for a pair of boyfriend jeans that fit loose in the thighs but snug from the knee down and fit snugger in the waist. I love these. They are the Gap Sexy Boyfriend.

Imitation is the Sincerest Form of Flattery

I discovered a new style blog: http://leopardandlillies.com/. The blogger, Amy, has an incredible sense of style. She wore a similar outfit to this, and I copied her. I really like her outfit better, but I was in a hurry this morning (first day of school), so I decided to go all black and white to simplify!

It’s so exciting to win these awards!

Rent the Runway
When I knew this event was coming I decided to use a discount I had from Rent the Runway to rent a designer dress for the evening. Honestly, the idea of renting a dress was less-than-exciting for me. After all, I’d have to send it back! I chose a $1000 Thakoon electric pink dress. It’s available for purchase at Bergdorf Goodman right now. For such an expensive dress, I have to admit, I wasn’t impressed. It was excellent quality but not any more than you can get with a designer who charges half that much.

I chose the 4-day rental and ordered a size 6 with a size 8 back up. The size 4 was not available. Rent the Runway allows you to order a back-up size, which is really convenient. You can also order a different style back-up dress for only $25. I had some options in my closet, so I didn’t do this. My dresses arrived on Wednesday (a day earlier than promised!) As expected, the size 8 was too large. The size 6 was a better fit, but was still too large in places. The size 4 probably would have been perfect. ::sigh::

Alterations: If I owned this dress, I would have taken it to the tailor and had them do the following: tack the bust so I don’t feel like I’m falling out of the dress (even with tape I felt uncomfortable), take in the bust (there is a huge roll of fabric that sticks out, I would like the fabric flat to my body) and take in the skirt at the hips just a touch. I may have even had the zipper shortened, as it fell to just past my hips and made a lump there. It was also a little big in the shoulders, so I would have had him fix that.

Unfortunately, the size 6 looked like someone threw it in the wash machine. It was a wrinkled mess and had that feel of a dress that’s been washed instead of dry cleaned. In addition, it was discolored in a few spots, almost like bleach had hit it. I emailed Rent the Runway and never did get a response. So, Thursday morning I called. The girl in customer service was awesome, very friendly and immediately had a new size 6 overnighted to me. She even made sure I would have it by 11 a.m. The dress came as expected and it looked brand new, crisp and with very few wrinkles. Here’s how I wore it:

Overall, my experience with Rent the Runway was positive. I thought some of the rental prices were  expensive, but the truth is, even if I had an event where I could wear this Thakoon dress again, I wouldn’t. I would want something different and new to wear. For me, the value in Rent the Runway is in the super high-end cocktail and formal wear. I probably wouldn’t rent a day dress or even something to wear to a wedding or similar event. Oh, and they also have jewelry you can rent which is cool. Once I was done with the rental, I put the dresses in the pre-paid envelope that Rent the Runway includes with your order and stuck it in the mailbox. My dresses had to be sent on Saturday–the day after the event.

I tried on several different pairs of shoes and jewelry before settling on the gold. Here are two of my experiments.

Here’s me with hubby:

And what I considered wearing, although I probably wouldn’t have gone with this.

A Dash of Color

While this tank/skirt combo would be just fine without the color pop, I really think the shot of coral makes it a “Wow” outfit. Don’t you agree?

Magpie Styling Tip: While shopping for fall clothing, think about finding accessories that can give your outfit a little oomph. In the past, I used to automatically reach for a metallic or a black accessory to go with an outfit like this. I’m sure you can relate. However, I’ve been trying to think outside the box.

I wore this outfit to my daughter’s meet the teacher day.
