Graphic Print

Sometimes I find it so difficult to get dressed in the summer. The heat makes me dread wearing jeans. We were going out for a casual dinner, so I kept the shorts on! I actually ended up wearing flats but I love the look of heels with shorts. This type of wedge espadrille looks classy, not slutty.

Denim Trends

Since I work from home, I spend most of my time in jeans. In fact, it’s rare that I have an occasion where jeans aren’t appropriate! The good news is that there are tons of choices out there when it comes to denim.  Overall, skinny jeans rule and most body types CAN wear the skinny jeans. You just have to find a pair that fits well. The other trend I’m noticing is ankle length denim—the better to show off your shoes! I’m not talking capris. I mean a skinny, ankle to mid-ankle length. Here are some of the trends I’m noticing.

1. Patterns. From florals to geometrics, prints are huge right not. And, there’s a pattern for everyone. Go bold with a colored floral or more wallflower with a tone-on-tone print. The key to wearing a patterned bottom is to go with a simpler top. I love a slouchy thin sweater in a solid color with patterned jeans.

2. Coated/Waxed/Leather. Yep, the leather leg is still in this year. Not bold enough to try leather? Or, perhaps you just don’t want to invest in a pair, then try coated or waxed jeans. They have the same look as leather without the steep price. In addition, they come in different sheens from matte to shiny. The key to wearing most skinny jeans—leather, coated or otherwise—is balance. I love to wear my leather leggings with a hip-length loose tee shirt and a fitted blazer. Or, try an untucked chambray blouse with a dark denim jacket and ballet flats–adorbs!

3. Rainbow Colors. This is the biggest trend–denim in a rainbow of colors. I have to admit, while I’m all over the leather leggings, I haven’t embraced the colored denim, but it’s on my Fall wish list. From salmon to cobalt, colored denim is taking the place of plain, old blue jeans. Try going monochromatic: red jeans, red blouse and a snazzy navy fitted jacket or chunky cardigan. Or, try a light blue top with cobalt jeans and a neon yellow belt to pop.

Denim on Denim

I really didn’t feel good this day. I didn’t feel like getting dressed and this was the easiest outfit to pull together. I don’t really like it all that much. Don’t  you hate coming up with fun outfits when you feel like crap?

Magpie Styling Tip: Love the denim-on-denim trend? The key is to wear two different color denims, not the same. Dark denim jeans with a light chambray top like below; or try colored denim with a chambray blouse.

Simple and Chic

I’ve been dying to wear this jacket. It’s simple but stands out, so I wanted to keep the rest of the outfit pretty low key. In the fall or winter I would wear this with leather leggings or black jeans. I’ve always wondered why people would spend so much money on items that appear to be basic. Now I really understand. The basics are what you build your wardrobe on. A jacket like this is an investment piece that will stand the test of time. The cut, the materials used and the fit make this splurgeworthy. What basics do you splurge on?

Finally had a date night with the hubby! We went to a local restaurant called The Ravenous Pig. It is seriously one of the coolest, tastiest restaurants in Orlando. My daughter told me I looked like I was wearing clothing from India. I guess it was the draping of this blouse that caught her eye!

Happy July 4th!

No beach for us this year. My son just had his wisdom teeth out yesterday. So, we’ll hang out, cook hamburgers and swim in our pool. I wore this outfit to an editorial meeting the other day but it’s very Independence-Day Festive!

The Girl With Blue Hair

I’ve had this picture since my trip to NYC in April. At the bar we went to–Flight 151–this girl was there. Doesn’t she look fab? She’s wearing a wig as she went to a hat party before going to the bar. I just love when people express their individual style.

Anyone see a pattern here? I really like this style dress. I like that it hides my tummy but is super comfy and stylish.

The Trade

When I was in NYC on a girl’s trip (here, here and here) , I saw these awesome cobalt blue embossed leather leggings by Helmut Lang. They were almost $1000, so there was no way I was purchasing them. But, I have a weakness for leather, even though it’s really not practical for a Florida girl; nor is it practical from an investment standpoint. After all, my advice to many is to buy coated leggings or faux leather as it’s a trend that probably won’t be around five years from now.
But, I wrote about the leggings on a fashion message board (I posted that I was looking for them and would trade or buy.) A member of the board emailed me that she had them in my size and would trade me. I had a Valentino purse that I was going to consign and she wanted it. It was nerve wracking waiting for that package to come. The girl was well-known on the boards and has a thriving ebay business with positive feedback, but I was still worried I would send the Valentino purse and come up empty-handed. Not so! They arrived, and they’re spectacular! The challenge? Figuring out what to wear with them. I put together this outfit and it’s blah. I think a colorful scarf (grey with pops of yellow, red or orange) would really make this outfit. Maybe a belt with a pop of color? What do you think?
