Everyday Casual

I bought these hot pink shorts from Ann Taylor during the 40% off promotion (which seems to happen every month nowadays.) I really like that they are polished, not too short and will look great with a blouse, jacket and wedges at night.

Magpie Styling Tip: Don’t forget about your shorts; wear them out at night! The trick is to wear shorts that have at least a 5 inch inseam. Shorter shorts look cheap with heels. Plus, you want them to be a polished material: Think silk, polished cotton, sequins, etc. Pair them with a cute flowy blouse, wedge sandals and a fitted blazer (not a boyfriend which is too long) or a cardigan.

Stained Glass Blue

This blouse reminds me of stained glass. It’s super sheer, so easy to wear over a tank with shorts in the summer. I knotted it at the waist because it is too long to wear out. I bought the bracelets in NYC from Alex & Ani and they’ve been a wardrobe staple. I love them because they include silver and gold so they go with everything. Plus, I can separate out the metals if I want to go one way or the other.

Floral and Silver

I love the easiness of a blouse like this.

Magpie Styling Tip: If you’ve got muffin top, go for flow. I like these loose-fitting blouses that hide and pudge around the middle. You can tuck them in and look polished. Of course, some days call for a tee shirt. Go for one that skims rather than hugs your body.

Sunny Days

When you have skin like mine, it’s hard to wear the color yellow. But, this bright yellow complements my skin tone pretty well. I added the statement necklace to make the outfit pop.

Magpie Style Tip: Do you find yourself going for a neutral when it comes to accessories? For example, the old me would have reached for a brown or tan belt and some kind of jewelry that had brown stones to go with this outfit. Break out of that rut and think color. This yellow would look equally awesome with bright blue or hot pink accessories. I find myself wearing color belts and jewelry almost as I would a neutral.

More Stripes!

I have to admit, I stopped buying at Ann Taylor Loft. Everything looks the same and sometimes it just screams soccer mom. Don’t get me wrong, they have some great basics that can be mixed and matched, it’s just that I want a break from them. That said, this dress is from Loft. 🙂 I was at a business lunch right across the street from Loft and decided to run in. I got this because my wish list this summer is to find more easy dresses to wear around town and to the beach.

Simple Stripes

This skirt was a NYC buy. I love that it’s casual enough to wear running errands. I find that most skirts just don’t work for me. Short and flouncy are too girly for me and pencil skirts are too dress up workish. I actually wore this with black flats for most of the day and added the wedges to wear to dinner.

Rocking the Ikat Print

I fell in love the minute I saw this dress in J Crew. I am a sucker for ikat and I really like the color blue on me. The silk makes it a little dressy, so I tried to dress it down with some neutral accessories and a white blazer. I ended up wearing the gold jewelry as the neon just didn’t feel right. Which do you like better?

The Secret to Wearing Shorts

It’s shorts season, at least for those of us in the south, and I’ve already noticed some interesting outfits out there. Just because you can fit into a size 4 doesn’t mean you should be wearing that size! Follow these tips to look effortless in this summer staple:

1. Size up. Hint: If you’re constantly pulling them out of your butt, then they’re too tight. There are three things I usually size up in: white jeans, shorts and shorter skirts. I’m telling you, it really makes a difference in fit–they’re a little longer and the hips fit a little slouchier. Now, here’s the kicker: get them altered to fit perfectly. I like my shorts a little looser in the leg but perfectly fitted in the waist and hips. And, I’m willing to spend the money to have them fitted if necessary.

2. Go long. While Bermuda shorts can make us look a little dumpy, don’t be afraid of them. Go with a style that’s at least 3 inches above the knee and wear a little bit of a wedge with them. It’s all about proportion. I really like a slim Bermuda with a blousey top and a wedge espadrille. But, longer shorts can look good with flats too, you just have to proportion it correctly.

3. Go short. Please, please, please don’t wear your short shorts with high heels unless you’re going out. And, even then, if you’re going to go that sexy on the bottom, wear a fitted blazer and pretty looser blouse on top. For most people, a 4-inch inseam is the shortest you’ll want to go. Anything shorter just throws off your proportions.

My Favorites:
Mossimo Sateen Cuff Shorts
: Not too short with a nice fit. They are a fitted style, not super loose.
Alice+Olivia Cuffed Shorts: Similar to the above but they come in some awesome colors like turquoise and yellow.
J Crew 5 inch Chino: Tons of colors and they last forever!
J Crew Summer Weight Bermuda Short:  A great length and some awesome colors.

Trying to get back in the swing of things after Spring Break. I wore this on Easter, although it’s been pictured on the blog before.
