My January Buys

One thing I’ve never done is set a clothing budget, bad, I know! So, one of my new year’s goals is to keep track of my purchases. I sell on eBay every month and also consign clothes at Top Drawer Consignment, so I generally spend whatever I make, and then some! My goal is to limit my spending to $300 a month. Here’s how I spent it and the story behind the price:

1. Milly Cate Sheath Dress $144—I saw this on Stacy London on What Not to Wear and fell in love. I plan to wear it to a wedding I’ll be attending later this year.
The story: I went to the What Not to Wear website and they list the brands of the clothing Stacy wears (Stacy’s Closet). Then, I did a Google search of the dress and found it at a few places but it was either full price at $395 or on sale for $250. So, I went to eBay, no luck.
I decided to do another Google search and dig deeper. I found it on a site called Green Gable Denim & Such, they had it in my size and they had a discount on top of the sale price! I called the store to ensure it was legit and then ordered. Got it in less than a week.

2. Banana Republic Barbara Stripe Knit Blazer
$81 (30% discount plus $10 reward card).
The Story: I really love this look and the other striped blazers I’ve seen have stripes that are too wide or cream/white is the main color, not navy. I also like that this is knit and it will work perfectly for Florida weather.

3. Blumarine leopard jacket with seafoam green pom pom trim $20.
The Story: I stopped in to a consignment shop (Clotheshorse II) and saw this from Italian designer Blumarine. It probably retailed for $200 to $300. I’m a sucker for leopard, but I especially love the mint/seafoam green pom pom trim as that color is super in for Spring. I’m having my tailor remove the ties as it just doesn’t work as a wrap for me. I’ll wear it as a jacket over a tank top.

4. TESS Brand (never heard of it) Black and White Striped Silk Blouse $10.

The Story: My other consignment buy. Black and white is forever stylish. The collar dates it a bit, but I think I can pull it off by standing it up and wearing a statement necklace.

5. Ann Taylor Loft Stripe Raglan Sleeve Henley Blouse in Sparkling Grape $42 (bought with gift card)
The Story: I just love this color, nuff said!

6. Giuseppe Zanotti Design Turquoise Shoes High Heels $100 (inc. shipping) via eBay.
The Story: I love the color and have been searching for some shoes that had some flair.

Total Spent: $397 (a little over budget, but I included the Loft stripe blouse even though I used a giftcard for it.)

January eBay Sales: $295.87
Consignment Sales: $60

(Total: $355.87)

Lovin’ Ikat Prints

Magpie Styling Tip: Love prints but not sure how to wear them? Keep it simple, try a printed shoe or a printed skirt with a solid shirt. As you get more comfortable wearing color and print, experiment. I am so happy to see so much color and so many prints out in the stores right now. I especially love the Ikat print. Check out Talbots for a classic take on ikat.

Navy and Red

Still working through the dresses in my closet to decide which are keepers. I fell in love with this dress (really the pattern) after seeing it in a magazine. I found it on ebay, got it home and just couldn’t figure out what to do with it. I really like how this combo turned out.

Magpie Styling Tip: Make time to experiment with your clothing. Stop laughing, everyone has five or ten minutes to try a few new things! For this dress, I tried on at least four belts—some wide, some skinny—before deciding on this one. I also tried on numerous pairs of shoes. When you see an item you want to buy at the store, think about what you already own and how much of it can be mixed and match with your new item.

Grey Day

I love dresses that I can just throw on and go. The flat boots dress it up a bit, but are still comfortable.

It’s a Wrap

I bought this dress for a trip to NYC two years ago. I didn’t wear it because I just didn’t feel like it looked right. So, it sat in my closet for two years. I’ve recently cleaned out my closet (who am I fooling? I do it every month!) and decided to give this dress a whirl. I actually like it. What do you think?

Before & After: Flowy Blouse

It seems universal, no one likes to tuck in their blouses because they figure if it’s flowy, it will hide whatever I want to hide. Wrong. This isn’t exactly a style tip, it’s a command! 🙂 I wanted to show you the difference between tucking and untucking a boxy, flowy blouse. If you don’t like to tuck, then belt it with a bright belt. The key is to give your waist some definition, no matter how much you want to hide it.

Peachy Keen

I love the softness of the peach against the sophisticated black. With the pearls, this outfit is so ladylike.

Magpie Styling Tip: The key to a great outfit is mixing textures and patterns. The soft silk blouse balances out the lace pattern of the skirt. While both are neutrals, the whole outfit stands out when texture and pattern are added. Throw in the feather vest and some classic pearls and you’ve created even more interest to the outfit.

Lucky Green

One of the trends this Spring season is to mix neutrals with a bright color. I love this lovely shade of green and decided to mix it with brown. I bought the leopard blouse, turned jacket, at a local consignment store. I don’t love this outfit, it needs something and I can’t quite put my finger on it. But, I do like the mix of brown and green.

Before & After: Shapeless Dress

Great dress, right? A lot of women love this type of dress because it hides everything. Yep, everything, even your figure! It looks like a sack. Well, I’m bringing sexy back. Admittedly, my belt should have fit tighter.

Magpie Styling Tip: A shapeless dress is begging for you to reign it in. Try a bright bold belt to define your waist. Don’t feel comfortable with bright colors? Try grey or even a cognac brown with boots or tights and booties. The key is to wear a belt. Add a colorful clutch and the eye is drawn away from your figure flaws!

Vote Now! Leather Dress: Stay or Go?

I have a weakness for certain things: leather clothing (in the most classic way so get your mind out of the gutter :)), glitter and glam. So, when I saw this Theyskens’ Theory Leather Jeselia Dress on super sale, all rational thought flew out the window. Not only was it marked down 75%, but I had an additional $25 off, and I’m a sucker for a leather dress. However, I’m not sure whether or not to keep it. Why? Because I know that this style isn’t that flattering on my body type.

The Pros:
• I will wear it, it’s an easy style to wear.
• The price was awesome!
I love leather, so it’s totally my style.

The Cons:
• The style is not that flattering.
• Even though I’ll wear it, in Florida it’s only good for a couple months a year—if that.
• The price was awesome, but I could get a cute Spring dress for the same price.

What do you think? Stay or Go? I’m not promising that I’ll listen 🙂 but sometimes you just need an outside opinion!

Should I Return the leather dress?

  • Keep it, it's a good investment piece. (59%, 13 Votes)
  • Hell yeah, RETURN the suckker! (41%, 9 Votes)
