The weather has been so warm here–that’s the thing about Florida, you go from 50s to 80s in a week. This may be my last time wearing boots.

Black and White

Met some friends for drinks last night. It’s been hot here, like 80s hot. I broke out shorts during the day and this is what I wore at night–with no jacket.

The Outfit Deets
Dress: Diane Von Furstenberg (2009)
Shoes: Kohl’s Simply Vera Wang Rath Platform Wedges
Necklaces: Alisa Michelle “Love the Life You Live” and Banana Republic
Bracelets: Black Zipper bracelet Ted Rossi NYC and link bracelet from Angela Caputi (Thanks Fabulous Florida Mommy!)

So, I wanted to wear these shoes. We went out to dinner as a family before dropping the kids off at home and meeting friends. However, both my son and my husband raised an eyebrow to these. In fact, my son told me they looked like hooker shoes, :)! So, I changed them for dinner to these caged heels from Banana Republic (2008). Personally, I don’t see the difference!:

Stylish Friends

Of course I wasn’t alone on my trip—I had a wonderful group of stylish friends. These outstanding women have been my sounding board and support group for 16 years. Funny story: As early adopters of the Internet and message boards, we all ended up on AOL’s pregnancy boards seeking support for our first pregnancies. We formed fast friendships that have lasted through the years. Now, as our babies hit 15 years old, we finally met up in NYC for a “Baby Email Group” reunion trip! Not everyone could make it, but the trip was so much fun and we plan to do it again next year.

A better view of this beautiful dress!

Robin ready for dinner and a show.

Lynne looking lovely in velvet pants and a cool scarf.

Denise in her Veronica Beard dress, Frye boots and Coach purse.

Wendy looking chic in her Tahari dress. I love the edge the tights add!

Robin in her sexy DVF wrap dress and tall suede boots. Her son made her necklace at camp!

Denise in her signature purple. I love the way the color pops. Her super cool skirt is by Piazza Sempione, boots are Christian Louboutin and purse by Coach.

Hittin’ The Town

Whew, it’s been a super busy work week and I’m finally catching up. First, here are some of my outfits from NYC.

I ditched the sequin skirt and decided to wear my new Helmut Lang leather pants (bought that day!) out to dinner and to see American Idiot.

The Outfit Deets
Top: Tahari (2009)
Belt: J Crew (2011)
Pants: Leather leggings, Helmut Lang (2010)
Ankle Boots: Diane Von Furstenberg Claude Suede Booties

I wore this out to dinner at Babbo’s and to a lounge, Pegu. I could have worn this dress without a belt and with a cool necklace or something but I wanted something bright and playful.

The Outfit Deets
Dress: Diane Von Furstenberg Slasher dress (2010)
Belt: Linea Pelle (2000)
Bracelets: Vintage Bakelite bangles
Ankle Boots: DVF Claude Suede Booties

Sorry about the grainy photos. I didn’t have my good camera with me!

J’adore New York

Hi Magpie Readers,

Sorry I went AWOL last week. Had a wonderful girls’ trip to NYC, filled with shopping, great food and super friends! The first day we hit Century 21, Diane Von Furstenberg and Jeffery.

I fell in love with this line by Loewe, a designer out of Spain.

The dress on the left is a gold leather with pink trim-so cool. Oh, and it’s a mere $4100…sigh…

Here’s what I wore shopping. It looks familiar because I wore it in this post. For New York, I added the lace turtleneck for warmth, although it was a very warm day–in the 60s!

The Outfit Deets
Lace turtleneck: Free People
Lace trim tank: Banana Republic
Black Jeans: Banana Republic
Sweater: Ann Taylor
Boots: Balenciaga
Necklaces: Target, Etsy, Alissa Michelle

My friend Robin and I in front of the DVF store.

I’ll be posting pictures of my favorite outfits from the trip later this week once I catch up on work!

And the Winner is…

Thanks for voting! I’m going with the Tory Burch sequins, although I changed up the blouse, added a belt and went with different jewelry (oh, and my hair won’t look like I just got done working out, and I’ll have some makeup on…)

Outfit B: Tory Burch Sequin Skirt

Dinner Date

Spur of the moment last Saturday, hubby and I decided to have dinner–just the two of us. Thankfully grandma stepped in to babysit and we went to Ruth’s Chris Steakhouse and ordered from the Bistro menu. It was wonderful! Since we didn’t plan on going anywhere fancy, I didn’t dress up. Still I felt comfy in my DVF olive cape and my go-to boots. Good thing we didn’t plan on going out to dinner on Valentine’s Day, hubby had jury duty, didn’t get out until 7pm then headed straight to baseball practice to pick up our son. He didn’t get home until 8:30pm!

The Outfit Deets
Cape: DVF Abbe Cape (2010)
Tee Shirt: Target
Jeans: Tory Burch (2010)
Boots: Frye Melissa
Purse: Tory Burch Carson hobo (2010)
Watch: Target Oversized Gold Watch

Love is in the Air

Happy Valentine’s Day! I put this outfit on the other day and now I’m thinking it would be perfect to take to NYC with me this weekend. Planning my wardrobe for this weekend has been a challenge–a good challenge. I don’t want to freeze my butt off, but I want to wear some of my skirts out to dinner. This dress might be good, it’s warm yet not too conservative.

The Outfit Deets
Dress: J Crew cashmere sweater dress (2008 or 2009)
Belt: J Crew Leopard (2009)
Boots: Ann Taylor kitten heel tall boots (2001) –I was an early adopter to the knee high boot trend. I remember my sister in law making fun of them (in jest), then buying a pair for herself a year or two later!
Purse: Vintage Leopard purchased years ago, can’t even remember when.
Watch: Toy Watch

Throwaway Fashion

I spent the last 30 minutes looking through pictures from the recent fashion shows in NYC. It was fashion week and they were showcasing Fall 2011 RTW styles. I couldn’t help but drool over Rebecca Minkoff, Erin Fetherston and a few others. But, it got me thinking about how I choose to spend my money. It’s a very personal thing, but my philosophy has always been to invest in a few classic designer pieces and fill in the gaps with less expensive items. And, to be honest, I wait for those classic designer pieces to go on sale before snapping them up!

Are you a more-is-more type of gal? Or, do you believe that a few quality items each season is enough? For me, I’m a more-is-more as long as it’s quality; but I’m trying to be a less-is-more. Confused? Yeah, me too. The fact is there’s always something new to buy. There’s always something new I fall in love with. But, at some point you have to say, “Stop.” Too many times an item I have to have languishes in my closet unworn. And, I find myself buying the same thing over and over again. I mean, how many classic black sheath dresses can you have?

And, I’ve gotten carried away by the prices at stores like Forever 21 and H&M. But, the truth is I never hold on to many items from those stores for very long, so it feels like I’m throwing my money way. For the most part, the clothes don’t hold up very well. On the flip side, I had to return two DVF dresses for defective zippers. But, I’ve found that the website Tulle has fabulous jackets that are well made and very affordable. I’ve also found some top-notch quality pants at Wal-Mart! The truth is, if something fits you well, it doesn’t matter what it costs. Style is all about FIT, not cost. That’s why I believe it’s always worth the money to have something tailored to fit you well.

You’ve all heard the advice: Invest in the classics and don’t pay a lot for the trendy items. What determines classic anyway? Some things that are considered “trendy” end up being classic. For example, leopard print is having a moment right now; but it’s really been a staple in my wardrobe for the past 15 years. Go with your gut. I know that the things I love tend to be somewhat conservative and classic. I’m not a super trend wearer. And, I know which designers fit me well and consistently design items I love.

What’s your style? Do you believe in spending the money on well-made items or do you think fashion is fleeting and want to get more items for your hard-earned buck?
